Matthew 8:5-13
A man in authority comes to Jesus, obviously desperate
because he is "pleading" with him. Even after Jesus commits to
arriving at the centurion's house, he will not allow Jesus to journey with him.
Rather, he recognizes his sin ("I am not worthy") and Jesus' power
and authority ("only speak a word"). Jesus stands in amazement at the
man's faith, and then declares to those following him that many in Israel will
not enter the kingdom of heaven while those from the far reaches of the earth
will enter because of faith.
